Abstract :
Colloidal sol-gel processing is used to produce optical fibre. Fumed silica dispersed in water is cast, gelled, and dried. Tubes thus formed are heat treated to dehydrate, to purify and to vitrify. They exceed 4 kg and when used to overclad conventional core-rods yield optical fibre meeting exacting commercial standards
