Abstract :
A filter is described which imitates median operation regarding impulse suppression and edge preservation. The algorithm realising the filter is an adaptive moving average filter. The coefficients are derived at each step and are based on the maximum likelihood estimator theory. Searching and sorting operations are avoided and the algorithm is suggested for real-time processing using standard digital hardware or DSPs.
