Abstract :
A compact diode-pumped passively Q-switched laser has been demonstrated with a coated Cr4+:YAG crystal as both a saturable absorber and an output coupler. When CW pumped with a fibre coupled laser diode, the laser produces pulses of 5-30 ns duration, with a repetition rate of 75-90 kHz. The highest peak power was 430 W, obtained at 1.6 W of pump power, which is a 520 times enhancement in comparison to an output power of 830 mW under CW operation
