Abstract
The author outlines work at his laboratory to show one approach to the difficult problem of describing the processes that cause the growth of water trees in cable insulation. Two investigations are described in more detail because they show some of the complications of the topic and the results presented are new. One study involves the development of a short test for resistance to water treeing. In the other, the discharge performance of cables during a breakdown test, is investigated.<>
