Abstract
In the past, the sea has played a uniquely important role in Britain´s economy. In the energy-deficient future, the seas seem set to play an equally important role, as providers of renewable alternative energy competing directly with the increasingly troubled nuclear-power programme. Far from being an easy option, however, the exploitation of the sea´s vast reserves of natural energy, as embodied in both tidal and wave motion, is now one of the major challenges facing Britain´s engineering community
