Abstract :
The neural circuitry in the striate cortex of the cat is examined. The question is approached through an inspection of the morphological design and the functional performance of neural elements. Procedures in neurohistology are explored to reveal the fine structure of striate neurons, while recordings from microelectrodes provide the material for characterizing the responses of single cells. The responses to visual and electrical stimuli are interpreted to find evidence for streaming and cellular interaction at the cortical level. In conclusion, an attempt is made to devise specific roles for cells in the different streams proposed for the striate cortex.
