Abstract :
The characteristics of optical directional couplers fabricated in K+/Na+ ion exchanged glass are shown to be dependent on the refractive index of the overlayer material. This effect was experimentally observed using index matching oils, and electrical switching using liquid crystal overlayers was demonstrated.
