Abstract :
A hybrid-integrated laser/driver module for 10 Gbit/s optical transmission has been developed. A 1.55 mu m DFB laser and a driver hybrid IC (HIC) are integrated with an optical isolator in the module package. The module has a novel structure which uses a coplanar line HIC consisting of three GaAs FETs mounted on a ceramic substrate. Rise and fall times of the output signal are 30 and 50 ps, respectively. Average optical power is +1.5 dBm and extinction ratio (on/off) is 10 dB. A 10 Gbit/s, 40 km fibre transmission using the transmitter module has been achieved.
