Abstract :
Standards used in virtual reality applications have evolved from a completely custom proprietary system developed for and used by a single government agency to an open technology taking advantage of the latest developments. Today these standards are used by hundreds, if not thousands, of organizations in industries ranging from military to entertainment to transportation. We review the history of networked virtual environments, describe where the technology stands today, and show how it is being integrated into commercial products
