Abstract :
A 2223 km transmission distance is achieved with a 2.5 Gbit/s FSK heterodyne detection system using erbium-doped-fibre in-line amplifiers and dispersion-shifted single-mode fibres. Twenty-five amplifiers placed at approximately 80 km intervals offer a total gain of more than 440 dB.
