Abstract :
Large scale Cu-24%Ag plates have been developed for high field Bitter magnets. Using these plates, we have succeeded in constructing a double Bitter magnet for 30 T hybrid magnet with 32 mm room temperature bore. This double Bitter magnet successfully generated 19 T under the back-up field of 11.1 T by a large bore superconducting magnet. Current and power for the water cooled magnet are about 21.3 kA and 6.9 MW, respectively. Using this 30 T hybrid magnet, we have performed crystal growth of NH/sub 4/Cl in water levitated by a magnetic field. It has been shown that only one crystal grows in such a levitating condition and nucleation of the crystal is strongly suppressed in a magnetic field different from the normal condition.
