Abstract :
A depressed-cladding, highly-germania-doped, distributed erbium-doped silica fibre amplifier has been fabricated exhibiting high gain and low dispersion. A gain of 27 dB over 10 km was achieved at 1.554 mu m. The fibre could be made transparent at this wavelength with only 15 mW pump power at 1.485 mu m. This is the lowest power requirement reported for lossless transmission.
