Western Europe leads the world in the application of electronic switching systems. Using discrete semiconductors or integrated circuits to establish the usual two-way communication paths in telephone networks, the new electronic systems are more compact, cheaper to build and maintain, and provide speedier service than the fully electromechanical systems still serving most of Europe and elsewhere.
