Abstract
A performance model for binary synchronisation preambles is described. The model indicates that, if soft decision information is present at the receiver, the performance of such preambles can be significantly improved by employing sequences with substantial negative sidelobes in their autocorrelation functions, rather than the conventional impulse-equivalent format. This result is confirmed by simulation.
