Abstract
In a previous column, we took note of the gloomy forecasts for the 1980s, encompassing energy shortages, inflation, more crowded cities, inadequate job opportunities, drug abuse, violence and vandalism, along with a decreasing respect for property and human life. We noted that the wide application of technology and a more broadly educated populace had generated increased expectations among various segments of society. When not all these expectations are fulfilled, as they cannot be, the societal institutions are perceived by the public as ultimately responsible.
