Abstract
The author introduces the subject of aeronautical mobile satellite communications, a new communications capability which will change the operation of airlines and air traffic control and offer new services to the flying public. A brief history of technical development is presented, including an overview of the international standard. This is followed by a description of the current status of equipment and service development from a Canadian viewpoint.
