Abstract
A history of the early Van de Graaff generator built by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1937 is given, together with an outline of the succeeding events which led to that corporation´s major role in nuclear energy. The paper is based on a talk given on the occasion of the dedication of this machine as an IEEE Historical Milestone in May of 1985.
