Abstract :
This paper proposes a logical and simple approach to the mode designations in a cylindrical optical fiber. An important approximation is introduced in the mathematical analysis to simplify the characteristic equation. Mode enumerations, field distributions, and propagation constants for some lower order modes are discussed and illustrated. The justification of using the linearly polarized mode designation is illustrated.
