Abstract
Canada is becoming increasingly dependent on satellites for communications links between remote communities and major cities. The loss of one of them is hard to evaluate, but would certainly be catastrophic. Consequently, they have become vital points requiring appropriate protection from hostile organizations. The author covers the different measures that were integrated into the Anik E telemetry, tracking and command system in order to encrypt the commands and to place the command link in a narrow spot beam focused on the legitimate ground stations.
