Abstract :
Pressure at the fiber-coating interface and stresses in the coating are computing for cooling of single-coated optical fibers. For simplicity the fiber is treated as rigid, mechanically and thermally. The largest tensile stress in the coating is found to be axial. E. Suhir´s (1990) analysis is extended by removal of some errors and unnecessary inconsistencies which are quantitatively, if not qualitatively, significant. The thermal stress analysis of a single-layer coating on a relatively rigid fiber is put on a consistent plain-strain basis
