Abstract :
This paper explains how a component-based architecture can be applied to routers and switches by use of standardized interfaces between controller and switching hardware. This is accomplished by the architecture of MSF, Multiservice Switching Forum. The architecture is explained and different protocols for switch control are reviewed. Some experimental support for this architecture is mentioned, and performance issues are briefly discussed.
