Abstract
The recent development of smart sensors connected through a network is enabling new types of scientific experiments of unprecedented scale at extreme locations. One such experiment is the IceCube neutrino observatory being completed at the geographical South Pole. IceCube´s main scientific goals are to detect astrophysical sources of high-energy neutrinos and solve the mystery of the origin of cosmic rays.
