  • Abstract
Digital signal processing techniques and architectures have evolved rapidly in recent years. As a consequence, the range of potential applications has broadened extensively in both existing areas such as radar and sonar signal processing and in relatively new fields such as communications and industrial condition monitoring. The article reviews the development and principal application areas for digital signal processing. The main architectural approaches to DSP design are then described with reference to practical examples where appropriate. Particular attention is given to programmable architectures, dedicated components and to ASIC-based systems
