Abstract :
High-power thyristors that can pass up to 3000 amperes and withstand, when turned off, up to 5000 volts are under development. Thyristors are being used in the control of reactive power flowing along AC lines, and the conversion of AC power into DC, and vice versa, for transmission over long distances or for tying together neighboring asynchronous power grids. Energy loss and cost reduction work is summarised.
