Abstract :
A system consists of two machines M1 and M2 with a reserve inventory in between. M1, can be initially working or failed. An equation for the optimal reserve inventory is obtained under general distributions of working and failed times; the equation is generally intractable. The model is described in the paper. The derivation, results, and examples are given in a separately available Supplement.
