Abstract :
Two noise figure definitions are developed that are consistent with the IEEE Standard and shown to cover the entire frequency range from RF to optical frequencies. In the classical regime, the two definitions merge. In the optical domain, they differ in value, but provide the same information. A simple way of computing the noise figure of a distributed amplifier, such as a Raman amplifier, is presented.
