  • Abstract
    This 12-page note explains the basic design concepts and theory of operation of instruments that measure microwave attenuation. The relative merits of series and parallel substitution systems are discussed, and operation of a parallel-type system is described. Elements of an attenuation calibrator systjm are described. These include the IF system, null indicating circuitry, reference generator, and AFC circuits. The significance of noise balance is explained.
