Abstract
Some controversial issues and some uncertainties have been raised concerning conservation of momentum and recoil in the railgun. These are due to the apparent failure of the Biot-Savart-Lorentz force expression to conserve momentum. A gas analogy for the electromagnetic field is suggested as a physical interpretation which resolves the problems
