Spectral lines: Looking back to look ahead

¿What´s past is prologue¿ is sufficiently timeworn to qualify as a cliche; yet it is a valid reminder that technical progress is more often made in a continuum and that real breakthroughs are rare. It serves also to discourage us from attempting to reinvent the wheel, and encourages us to exploit history in making technological projections and forecasts.
