Abstract
Artificial intelligence has recently been investigated and applied with success to the solution of some long-standing power system problems where conventional methods experience difficulty. Tutorials previously published in the Power Engineering Journal have introduced expert systems and artificial neural network applications in power systems. This series of three tutorials gives practising power engineers an overview and general appreciation of the basic concepts of fuzzy logic and an insight into how this technique can be applied to solve complex power system problems. The first tutorial gives a general introduction to fuzzy logic.
