Abstract
This paper presents the development and implementation methodology of a new pilot protection scheme using the direction of fault current. The proposed algorithm reduces the complexity of communication when compared to pilot differential protection. Commercial SEL relays are used to implement the protection algorithm. A PSCAD simulation matching the hardware prototype is presented in the paper. Simulation is carried out on FREEDM loop system. Hardware implementation and mode of communication is presented.
