Abstract :
Many signal compression schemes retain only the most significant coefficients from a projection on a given basis. A practical and general method is presented for encoding the side information describing the location of the selected coefficients, with theoretically minimal codelength and using only integer arithmetic, for the case when the compression ratio is imposed and no model is assumed about the coefficient distribution
