Abstract
The counting of fish (salmon, trout and sea trout) in rivers is a basic tool that allows us to make an inventory of river resources and put its management in order. In this paper we present the design of two low cost optical methods for this purpose. One of them is based on an array of emitters and infrared receivers which detect the presence of a fish when the light beam is broken by the silhouette of a fish. The other method analysed is based on the use of two webcams, one commercial data acquisition card and a program developed in LabVIEW for the processing of the image. The aim of the work is to determine the feasibility of both systems which so far have only been tested in the laboratory.
