Abstract :
This eight-page booklet explains the properties and characteristics of superconducting cables. Three cable materials ¿ NbTi, Nb3Sn, and flexible Nb3Sn ¿ are discussed. Composition, wire-filament size, operating temperatures, and other important parameters are covered. Relationship between minimum bend diameter and strand diameter, special production techniques, and critical currents are among the topics discussed for each material. A general discussion covers insulation, twisted filaments, mixed-matrix superconductors, multistrand conductors, mechanical properties, quality assurance, joining, and special superconductors.
