Abstract :
High-definition television, with a much sharper picture than is currently available, is expected to be in retail stores before the decade is out. A number of converging developments are expected to yield a TV picture with over 1100 scanning lines, or roughly twice the number now specified by the three major color television standards. The developments include digital broadcast equipment, wideband analog and digital video tape recorders, direct-broadcast satellites, and TV receivers with large, wide screens.
