Abstract :
The invention of the microprocessor in 1971 opened the floodgates of what had previously been a contained discipline: computer science. Computers now pervade most electrical engineering disciplines, but few more than telecommunications. It has evolved in the past decade from the point-to-point communication of computers to the linking of computers into networks.
