Abstract :
A surface wave based hologram fed by a 1-D traveling wave (series-fed) microstrip patch array to achieve broadside radiation is presented. This antenna may alternatively be described as a periodic surface wave based leaky-wave antenna (LWA) excited by a fundamental mode periodic microstrip LWA. Broadside beam in the E-plane is formed by the symmetric holographic surface. The radiation beam scans with frequency in the H-plane from backward to forward direction through broadside. A reflection compensation technique that facilitates the broadside beam for the series-fed array is introduced. Measured maximum peak radiation at broadside in both E and H-planes is achieved with 17.7 dBi antenna gain at approximately 7.7 GHz.
