Abstract
The principal suspects in the Jan. 28 shuttle accident, as we write, are the gaskets, or O-rings, intended as the ultimate seal between segments of the solid rocket motors. Their potentiality for failure had been well known; their deterioration during previous missions had been well documented; and numerous alternate designs had been proposed.
