Abstract :
The benefits that resulted in 1985 from the introduction of implantable defibrillators are discussed. Attention is also given to such developments as cochlear implants to help the deaf hear and lithotripters to crumble kidney stones using shock waves. The year 1985 also saw a wider use of magnetic resonance imaging and developments in temporary and permanent ventricular assist devices.
