Abstract :
The hobbyists´ art of making robots has turned into serious fun. Many of the robots are not fully autonomous machines, and hence are not true robots by some definitions; they are mechanical contraptions operated by remote control. Sometimes esthetics is the primary ingredient: some roboticists see themselves more as artists than engineers, and their creations are to them electrified sculptures. Some value the entertainment potential: their robots have starred in motion pictures, television, and on the stage. Examples of each type of robot are described.
