Noise translation characteristics in OE/EO conversion with a Mach-Zehnder modulator

Abstract :
Noise translation properties in OE/EO conversion using a LiNbO/sub 3/ Mach-Zehnder (MZ) modulator are described. Due to the sinusoidal modulation characteristic of a MZ modulator, signal fluctuation is suppressed through the conversion process. Experiments demonstrate that allowable optical SN is improved by 8.2 dB with the conversion. The operation conditions under which the converter works effectively are also examined.
