Abstract :
The TE family of self-guided beams in saturable nonlinear media is examined both numerically and analytically based on a variational technique. It is shown that in a saturable nonlinear medium, trapping in TE patterns can occur over a continuous range of power and the beam size of self-trapped TE beams depends on the trapping power, in contrast to the Kerr-law case. Furthermore, the fundamental self-trapped TE01 beam in a saturable nonlinear medium is found to be stable. This opens up a possibility for practical realization of self-trapping with the TE01 pattern, which is not possible in a Kerr-law nonlinear medium
