Abstract :
Hardware multithreading is enabled in silicon for graphics chips or graphics-processing units (GPUs) and to some level in servers. The case is now being presented for software and newer applications to catch up with hardware, in particular to Moore´s law. The approach can be to enhance operating systems, compilers, software languages, and applications in that order, for maximum utilization of the underlying hardware. Operating systems in conjunction with the hardware can off-load many of the software tasks to the hardware. Hardware and system architecture look at the problem of utilization of multicore processors at two extreme ends. Software languages and associated tools that are sandwiched between the two have to solve the problem of optimal usage of n-core processors.
