Abstract :
The issues involved in standardizing the seventh (application) layer of the Open Systems Interconnection model are examined. The status of the ISO Open Distributed Processing (ODP) reference model and of other models is summarized. Telecommunication service requirements are discussed within the context of these standardization efforts.<>
