Abstract :
The paper deals with that part of the locomotive which may termed the chassis and body work; it does not concern itself with mechanical design of electrical apparatus. After surveying the physical limitations within which locomotives must be designed, the paper outlines the three main groups into which chassis design naturally falls, namely the arrangement based on steamlocomotive practice, the articulated-bogie type and the independentbogie type. Examples in each group are described, and special attention is given to variationsin bogie design. Main-frame and body design is followed by sections on brake gear and train heating equipment, and a final section endeavours to summarize present trends.
