Abstract
The present paper has made an exploratory investigation into whether mechanistic view on the science-based start-up generation can be considered fruitful avenue for future research. In addition, the paper combined the mechanistic view with an ecosystems view of innovations. It indeed seems that this kind of approach might be able to produce new and possibly valuable insight into the birth mechanisms of science-based start-ups. The recognition of important basic functionalities are of value to all the stakeholders in the start-up generation process, not just the start-up itself but also policy makers and other stakeholders involved may find this kind of approach fruitful.
