Charles Babbage´s abortive attempt to build the first computer cost as much, in its day, as 50 brand-new steam locomotives. Here, the author recounts the story of perhaps the most heroic failure of the 19th century and outlines the two classes (difference and analytical) of engines designed by Babbage
