Abstract :
The general theory for planar bends in a thin fiber with no torsion is derived from a variational principle. The theory is applied to 90° symmetric bends with fixed endpoints and end slopes. Discrete families of bend shapes are discovered, and four are described with the aid of numerically generated examples
