Abstract
At a new Government research establishment, site-generated variable-frequency power is used with synchronous motors to provide variable-speed drives for large wind tunnels. The paper discusses the use of gas turbines as prime movers and describes the special features of the variable-frequency system and its interconnection with the C.E.A. Grid supply. Finally, details are given of the operation of the first large wind tunnel to be connected to the variable-frequency power system.
