Abstract :
A method of determining the maximal areal density and optimal user bit aspect ratio of a data channel is developed. Examples of three types of partial response maximum likelihood (PR4, MSN, and EPR) channels and a peak detector channel are compared to each other and to the theoretical upper capacity bound
